F#ck Your Dying Wish

I do believe that at one point in time our culture held a person’s dying wish with great respect, consideration, and it was an natural instinct to work to fulfill or honor that wish whenever possible. In fact, any request from a person who was in the process of transitioning out of this life was given great attention and respect. Apparently that’s no longer the case. The Republican Party and their supporters have entered into the “ends justify the means” protocol and nothing will get in their way of getting the “ends” they’ve salivated over for decades.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg understood the critical role she played on the Supreme Court and it depresses me to think that she spent the last years of her storied life trying to protect her seat from being filled by a Trump appointee. It breaks my heart to know that she had to spend any of her last precious moments of life trying to protect the Supreme Court rather than getting to fully enjoy that time spending it with her family and friends without worry about what would happen if she retired or passed on before the next election. What is even more depressing is that the Republican Party ignored her last wish because they wanted to fill that seat. Justice Ginsburg’s last wish didn’t matter. 90 years of precedence didn’t matter. The justifications they arrogantly spewed out when it came to why Obama couldn’t have his nomination voted on by the Senate didn’t matter either. It doesn’t seem to matter to them that the Republican Party is now the poster children for hypocrisy. All that matters to them is that they filled that seat. Never mind the Covid Crises this nation is facing with 220 plus thousand people dead, and millions more suffering. For the Republican Party all that mattered was filling that seat with the type of person they wanted.

The Republican Party has shown the world what they’re all about. If you’re black or brown you don’t matter. If you’re a woman you don’t matter. If you’re white but exists on lower socio-economic levels you only matter up until you cast your vote, then you get to not matter until the next election. It doesn’t matter if you served this country with honor, and you have a dying last wish that goes against what they ultimately want, you don’t matter. It doesn’t matter if you have a constitutional right to pick a Supreme Court Justice or to vote. If they don’t want you to do either of those things, your rights don’t matter and they will stop you by any means necessary. It doesn’t matter to them what the majority wants if it goes against what they want, the majority doesn’t matter to them.

The Republican Party as a whole represents the ugliest and most reprehensible behaviors of society and anyone who still aligns themselves with the party is just as bad as those Republican Politicians who took an oath to serve the people but have decided to instead either serve their interests or sit quietly and offer no resistance to the skullduggery.

Those members of the Republican Party who are using their power to take what they want are saying “fuck you” to everyone who doesn’t agree with them each and every time they lie, cheat, reengineer or ignore the long held norms and constitutional processes in order to satisfy their personal agendas. They say “fuck you” to the people they swore to protect and serve. They say “fuck you” to the idea of Democracy and all of the mechanisms designed to protect it.

So this is where we are at. Last wishes are no longer sacred, the wild desires of the fanatical outweighs the needs of the many and the only way to correct any of these troubling situations is for the non-fanatical people to vote and vote smart. It is my deepest desire that Election Day 2020 will be the day that we can rebuild a democracy and society were people are valued, considered, and respected regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexuality or socio-economic standing.

Rest in Power and Peace Ruth Bader Ginsburg
